SubEthaEdit Alternative: MoonEdit

Think of the following scenario:
You attend a lecture and take notes using your Computer. Others are doing the same. Wouldn’t it be great if you all could edit the same text document at the same time? And everybody has his/her own cursor? I think that would be a mind blowing experience! You could actually see on your screen what the lecturer is talking about – the notes will show up in realtime, magically. And everybody can edit the other’s notes as well.

Realtime collaborative note-taking

There is a solution for Apple-Computers, I admit. It is called SubEthaEdit and it seems to work fine. But it’s only available for mac. 🙁

So I searched the web and found some alternatives to SubEthaEdit. They are not exactly clones, but at least the first one is worth a look.

Here’s what I found:

  • MoonEdit (for Windows 98/XP/2000, Linux, FreeBSD):

    Cooperative multi-user text editing over the Internet. This software is completely free for non-commercial use.

    MoonEdit’s history is older than SubethaEdit and has been developed independently. So I can’t really speak of a clone.

    I needed to open a port in the configuration of my router hardware (that’s not newbie-friendly). But apart from that, it’s really easy to use. Watch the demonstration movie to get a first impression.

    I did not test the others because they seemed to complicated for my purpose. They may become simpler in future versions, so I list them here:

  • Fuse (needs Python):

    The fuse project’s goal is to create an open-source, cross-platform multi-user collaborative editor in Python, using Cocoa, wx, and other bindings for the User Interface.

  • LeoN: Leo over Network (needs Python, Leo, TwistedMatrix):

    Here are some infos about LeoN, a plug in for Leo to enable collaborative editing over the network.

    Collaborative editing means that more than one person can edit the same document at the same time, without forking different versions. Everyone see the others one modifications at near to realtime. LeoN is released under the GNU GPL.

  • SubPathetaEdit (needs Python):

    SubPathetaEdit is like SubEthaEdit, only much less so. SubPathetaEdit is a program you use so that lots of people can edit the same document more or less at the same time.

Furthermore, somebody seems to work on a realtime collaboration mode for Microsoft Word and Powerpoint. I found a link to an online demo in an article about collaborative computing, but they didn’t seem to work.

I can’t wait for all those things to be developed!

Holger und Gerard bei der Referatsbesprechung

Gerard (links) und ich haben in einem freien TU-Hörsaal unser Usability-Referat für Mediengestaltung am Donnerstag besprochen. Wir werden hauptsächlich kleine Experimente und Übungen machen und sind große Freunde von Steve Krug!

Wie ich schon beim Projekttreffen mit Mike festgestellt habe, ist malen ganz toll um Ideen zu kriegen, zu sammeln und zu sortieren. 🙂

Desinformationsdesign: Kostenlose Kreditkarte?

Ich kann es nicht leiden, wenn meine Hausbank mich für dumm verkaufen will.

Die Gestaltung des Werbebriefs, den ich heute erhalten habe, ist doch gezielte „Desinformation“. Die angebotene Kreditkarte ist nicht gebührenfrei sondern kostet 30 Euro! Und hinten drauf in hellgrau auf weiß stehen die eigentlichen Vertragsbedingungen – gewollt leseunfreundlich.

MasterCard-Werbung als Suchspiel: Wo steht der Preis des beworbenen Produkts?

Ja, auf dem Blatt steht schon „Jahrespreis: nur 30 EUR“ – aber das ist zu versteckt!

Und wieso liegt die Karte „für mich bereit“? Heißt das, mein Name wurde bereits in eine Karte gestanzt? Sicher nicht. Ich schreibe doch auch niemandem „Ihre Website liegt für Sie bereit“, denn die muss ja erst bestellt und entwickelt werden.

Kostenlose Alternative für Schnäppchenjäger:
Eine wirklich kostenlose Kreditkarte habe ich mir bereits vor einiger Zeit bei der KarstadtQuelle-Bank geholt. Die versuchen einem zwar dazu eine kostenlose „HappyDigits“-Sammelpunktekarte anzudrehen. Man kann die Punktekarte aber einfach abbestellen, wenn man seine Nutzungsdaten nicht preisgeben will. Für diese Information erhalte ich übrigens keinerlei Provision.

GMail Backup on Local Computer

I just suggested a new feature to GMail:

Offer a way to download all messages older than x days to a local computer and make them searchable (i.e. using Google Desktop Search).

This would be a way to clean up disk space while keeping older e-mails. 1 GB is smaller than we may think!

And another one (March 29th):

Include a download-feature so I can burn my old e-mails on CDROM.

If you want that feature too, please let Google know!

Instant Messaging Kultur und Trends in Asien

Wolfgang Sommergut macht sich Gedanken über die Kultur von Instant Messaging.

Ich selbst verwende Instant Messenger vor allem, um im Netz „präsent“ zu sein und chatte nur gelegentlich und eher kurz.

Um nicht unhöflich zu erscheinen verändere ich die Statusanzeige von Trillian (ICQ) und Skype. Habe ich zu tun, stelle ich auf „Do Not Disturb“ – dann erhalten die anderen eine entsprechende Mitteilung und ich werde nicht von aufpoppenden Fenstern abgelenkt.

Beim Chat mit guten Freunden kommt es übrigens vor, dass Begrüßung und Verabschiedung einfach wegfallen – man ist ja „immer da“. Am Ende meiner E-Mails schreibe ich aber noch „Gruß, Holger“. 😉

In Asien verdrängen Instant Messenger offenbar die Kommunikation via E-Mail. Das berichtete Outblaze-Gründer Yat Su auf dem Digital Lifestyle Day in München am vergangenen Dienstag. E-Mail werde als Kommunikationsmedium für „alte Leute“ gesehen. Sein 15-minütiger Vortrag (als Videostream) hat mich sehr inspiriert.

Auch die anderen Video-Mitschnitte des Digital Lifestyle Days sind mit den „Stars“ der Social Software-Szene besetzt und sehr empfehlenswert.
